Sketches
Found Object Sketches is a collection of outdoor sculptures that engage with the immense volume of materials that already exist in the landscape—materials that might appear to possess little value, like discarded cinder blocks, tractor tires, agricultural plastics, seedheads, and other windfall.
Second, make connections from object to object and from object to place—does this coupling produce tension? Order? Mystery? Third, integrate the atmosphere and season. This part is fickle. How can the composition express what it is like to be in that place at that moment? How does it capture light and cast shadow?
While there is no recipe for making a Found Object Sketch, there is a methodology. First, assess the site’s existing conditions—what materials are present? How is it maintained and by whom? What is the landscape’s prevailing purpose?
Next, consider composition. This means producing alignments and heightening color and texture. Then, before the sun dips and the wind knocks it down: photograph it. Recompose it and photograph it again (and again).
